Where is your God now?: MIT professor creates artificial leaf thats ten times more efficient than real ones.

Why is it that we can create things better than ‘God’? If you truly believe God exists then it would seem as if we’re smarter than him, not only have we created an artificial leaf better than the real thing, but plenty of people could list many things we could improve on in other areas of life - one example of course is not having 1 hole for breathing and eating because its too prone to choking.

‘God’ is about as impressive as a childrens magician at an adults party.

Actually, the magician is WAY more impressive, since he’s kicking ANY gods butt by ACTUALLY EXISTING.

The Atheist Experience with Ray Comfort as guest was awesome, Ray seems like a nice guy but its clear he knows nothing about science. Anyone who hasnt seen it should watch it, it is like an hour long though.

I don’t see how anyone could call a serial liar a “nice guy”, but I guess “nice” is, after all, a subjective term.

Maybe it’s just me, but anyone who tells people they’re going to burn in a lake of fire for not thinking exactly the same way they do, for not HATING the same things they hate is pretty far from “nice”.

When someone has the temerity to incite hatred of the GLBT community, the utter gall to call the scientific process a “lie” and a “conspiracy”, when anyone who has as much privilege as Ray Comfort and tries to wield that privilege as a club to deny people their rights, their relationships or access to necessary medical care the last thing I think of is the word “nice”.  Maybe it’s because I’m significantly older than most of the people I follow on tumblr, and have therefore had at least an extra decade of listening to/reading about this sort of thing, but I’m sick and bloody tired of this accommodationist crap.

Ray Comfort exists for the sole purpose of furthering his own agenda.  He doesn’t give a damn about anything but furthering humanity’s descent into a New Dark Age where you can only love who he says you can love, where scientific inquiry into the origins and development of life on our planet and elsewhere in the universe can only take place within a limited framework provided by a bunch of bronze-age myths, where women are are not valued as people, but as baby making machines while being reviled as foul temptresses who are inherently evil and where little children are taught their humanity is something for which they must feel ashamed.

There’s nothing nice about him.  Yes, he is polite, but so is your average sociopath.

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing

And I am scared of some of the misinformed opinions here on tumblr. Mainly, your “Of course, if you hate children you wouldn’t feel this way…” statement.

First of all, being pro-choice does not mean that you “hate children.” Simply because you would not choose to…

Try being child-free.  People conflate my not wanting to EVER have be pregnant/have children will all sorts of stupid ideas. They think I HATE kids or want to KILL CHILDREN… Add to that my pro-choice stance and my atheism and they seem to think it means I want to murder any child I see and rip open pregnant women to eat their fetuses or use them in some twisted, made up “arcane rituals” they heard about on Fox News.

Yeah, people can be incredibly stupid.  That, in and of itself, is not so bad.  It’s when they use those ignorant misconceptions to try to get you fired from your job, arrested or harrassed endlessly that it crosses the line from stupid to dangerous.

I hope it doesn’t ever cross over in to your meat-space life.  If it does, though, please remember that law enforcement officers can be just as sadistic and cruel as the jackasses they’re supposed to be pursuing.

These “pro-life” people aren’t in the LEAST pro-life.  They’re fetus fetishists.  They don’t give a damn about anyone’s life.  They only care about their ideology.  They SALIVATE over the opportunity to give public displays of their so-called “piety” as they pray fervently and cry big, fake crocodile tears for the benefit of the other “christians” in front of abortion clinics.

Don’t think for one second these hypocritical assholes give a flying fuck at a rolling doughnut about “babies” or “fetuses”.  The only thing they give a shit about is making themselves look more pious than the person sitting next to them in church, because they’re so fucking sick and empty inside that they think currying favour with their “god” (read: Playing the “holier than thou” game) in such a crassly low-class way is somehow going to “save” them from their torture-porn imaginings of their fairy tale “life after death”.

It’s sick shit all the way down with these deluded fuckwits.

Yes, yes, yes.  One thousand times, yes.

Yes, yes, yes.  One thousand times, yes.

Heh.  It’s funny because it’s true.

Heh.  It’s funny because it’s true.

The only show I’ve seen get BETTER with every passing day is ‘The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’

Too true.

The Expanding Light Echo of Red Supergiant Star V838 Monocerotis

V838 Monocerotis (V838 Mon) is a red variable star in the constellation Monoceros about 20,000 light years (6 kpc) from the Sun, and possibly one of the largest known stars. The previously unknown star was observed in early 2002 experiencing a major outburst. Originally believed to be a typical nova eruption, it was then realized to be something completely different. The reason for the outburst is still uncertain, but several theories have been put forward, including an eruption related to stellar death processes and a merger of a binary star or planets.Rapidly brightening objects like novae and supernovae are known to produce a phenomenon known as light echo. The light that travels directly from the object arrives first. If there are clouds of interstellar matter around the star, some light is reflected from the clouds. Because of the longer path, the reflected light arrives later producing a vision of expanding rings of light around the erupted object. In addition, the rings appear to travel faster than the speed of light.
In the case of V838 Monocerotis, the light echo produced was unprecedented and is well documented in images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.
